In addition to longer flight times, I think the league is more concerned about the audience ratings, which tend to draw more audiences if the two teams are "traditional rivals". Most of these rivalries (e.g. Knick-Celtics, Mavs-Rockets etc.) are within the same conference (they had more chances playing each other).
However, I think a cross conference playoff team-up is a good idea, though I am not sure how much that will help balancing the power between the two conferences. They need to change the home court rules and probably the schedules etc., but it is doable. Of course, they have to change the current 2-2-1-1-1 playoff sequence back to 2-3-2 to reduce flight times. ... |
